John Felix Anthony Cena Jr. was born on April 23, 1977, in West Newbury, Massachusetts,
son of Carol (née Lupien) and John Felix Anthony Cena.

He is of Italian descent and has an older brother (Stephen) and three younger brothers (Dan, Matt, and Sean). His maternal grandfather was baseball player Tony Lupien.

Growing up as a Catholic, he attended Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts, before moving to Cushing Academy,

a private boarding school in Ashburnham, Massachusetts. He then attended Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. In college,

it was an NCAA Division III All-American Center on the university's soccer team and was number 54, which is still used in some of its WWE products. 

Cena graduated from Springfield College in 1998 with a degree in movement physiology and body movement, after which he pursued a career in bodybuilding and worked as a limousine driver.


Cena began his professional wrestling education in 1999 at Ultimate Pro Wrestling University (UPW) in California, directed by Rick Bassman.
